- Frankfurt IAA Motor Show 2017 -

Previous Frankfurt IAA review : 2015 - 2011 -- 2009 - 2007

The 64th IAA Frankfurt Motor Show gathered some 800 thousand visitors in eleven days for an exhibition dedicated to automobile and that occurs every two years. It was an opportunity to examine new automobiles and concept cars or design studies as well as others previously introduced at Shangai, Detroit or Paris since the last Frankfurt Show.  This year there was a real contrast between automobiles available on the market and mostly propelled by hydrocarbon internal combustion engines and concept cars or design studies illustrating some future solutions where essentially electric propulsions  are proposed. New models like the long awaited new Mercedes AMG Project One integrates both internal combustion engine and electric propulsion. The Ferrari Portofino V8 GT , the Lamborghini Aventador S or the Porsche 911 GT2 RS or GT3 Touring Pack rely exclusively on internal combustion engines.

The concept vehicles most often also introduce some autonomous level system. Let us recall that the autonomous vehicle concept is defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers in six levels of automation. The level zero relates to no automation and full time performance by the human driver of all aspects of the dynamic driving task. The Level five on the other hand relates to full automation with full time performance by an automated driving system of all aspects of the dynamic driving task. Projects like the Smart Vision EQ or the AUDI Alcion  are level five illustration and do not include a steering wheel or pedals. Presently the application of autonomous driving is strictly limited by legislation and insurance responsibility definition. Some driving assistance resulting from these developments are gradually integrated in automobiles proposed on the market.

The German manufacturers, in particular, started an offensive for emission-free and climate-neutral cars with over 150 electric models scheduled in the next few years. Each German group has formed an electric car dedicated brand, BMW with i Models already offering the i3 and i8. Mercedes Benz announced the EQ brand at Paris Show in 2016 while Volkswagen have announced the I.D. electric car family. Audi utilizes the "e-tron" designation. The charging infrastructure, sales prices  and operating range still require further improvements before electric cars can be widely accepted. Presently electric cars essentially concern early adopters.

The organizers announced 228 world première for this exhibit; we obviously had to make a selection for this review. We propose to present separately the automobiles now available on the market or for competition and the concept cars and design studies introducing a vision of some future solutions.

1-6- AUDI A8 and A8L Fourth Generation

All-new luxury saloon which pushes technological limits in numerous areas, including full driving automation, makes its world debut. Piloted driving functions to be rolled out in production Audi A8 versions from 2018.

The new Audi A8 is stylistically defining – it signals the beginning of a new design era for the entire brand. The front end with its wide, upright Singleframe grille and the fluid, muscular body convey power, elegance, sophistication and modernity, and deliver on the promise made by the Audi prologue design study. The luxury saloon makes a suitably emphatic statement whether in 5.17-metre ‘standard’ form or as the A8 L, which has a 13 centimetre longer wheelbase.

The new A8 makes its debut with two extensively reengineered V6 turbo engines: a 3.0 TDI and a 3.0 TFSI. The diesel develops 286PS, and the petrol version 340PS. An eight-cylinder TDI – a 4.0-litre with 435PS – will follow slightly later. The exclusive top engine version is the W12 with a displacement of 6.0 litres.

All five engines operate in conjunction with a belt alternator starter (BAS), which is the nerve centre of the 48-volt electrical system. This mild hybrid technology (MHEV, mild hybrid electric vehicle) enables the car to coast with the engine switched off, and to restart smoothly. It also has an extended start/stop function and an energy recovery output of up to 12 kW. The combined effect of these measures is to bring down the fuel consumption of the already efficient engines even further – by as much as 0.7 litres for every 100 kilometres (62.1 miles) covered in real world driving conditions.
The A8 L e-tron quattro with its powerful plug-in hybrid drivetrain will follow at a later date: Its 3.0 TFSI engine and powerful electric motor achieve 449PS of system power and 700 Nm (516.3 lb-ft) of system torque. The lithium-ion battery stores enough power for about 31 miles of electric driving. Audi Wireless Charging will be offered at a later date as an option. A pad in the garage floor transfers the power inductively to a receiver coil in the car.

The new A8 is the first production car to have been developed specially for highly automated driving. The Audi AI traffic jam pilot takes charge of driving in slow-moving traffic at up to 37mph on major roads where a physical barrier separates the two carriageways. The system is activated using the AI button on the centre console.
The traffic jam pilot manages starting, accelerating, steering and braking. The driver no longer needs to monitor the car permanently. They can take their hands off the steering wheel permanently and, depending on the national laws, focus on a different activity that is supported by the car, such as watching the on-board TV. As soon as the system reaches its limits, it calls on the driver to take back control of the task of driving.

At the heart of the new Continental GT sits an all-new, enhanced version of Bentley’s renowned 6.0-litre, twin-turbocharged W12 TSI engine, mated, for the first time, to a dual-clutch eight-speed transmission, for faster, more efficient gear changes.

A new, technically advanced, adaptive chassis uses Bentley’s intelligent 48-volt Dynamic Ride System to ensure a responsive ride and exceptional handling and refinement in all road conditions. The new system controls ride comfort and lateral roll, cushioning passengers from excessive movement as well as making the car feel effortlessly precise.

The new Continental GT is offered at launch with an enhanced version of Bentley’s peerless 6.0-litre, W12 TSI engine that sets a new benchmark in performance.
Designed, developed and handbuilt in Crewe, the W12 TSI engine is the most advanced 12-cylinder engine in the world. The unique ‘W’ configuration means that the engine is 24 per cent shorter than an equivalent V12, benefitting weight distribution and maximising usable cabin space.

The new powertrain uses the very latest engine management technology, with 300 million software calculations per second. It produces 635 PS (626 bhp) and 900 Nm (664 lb.ft.) of torque, and accelerates the new Continental GT to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds (0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds), and on to a top speed of 333 km/h (207 mph)*.

1-9- Porsche 911 GT2 RS

The fastest and most powerful road-approved 911 celebrated its world premiere at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK (2017 June 30 to July 2). At the heart of this high-performance sports car is a 515 kW (700 hp) biturbo flat engine. Weighing in at 1,470 kg with a full fuel tank, the lightweight two-seater accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds. The rear-wheel drive Coupé has a top speed of 340 km/h, and with its near-motorsport drive technology, the new 911 GT2 RS trumps its 3.6-litre predecessor by 59 kW (80 hp) and achieves a torque of 750 Newton metres (an increase of 50 Nm).

The engine builds on that 3.8-litre in the 911 Turbo S at 427 kW (580 hp). In order to increase performance, large turbochargers push an increased volume of process air into the combustion chambers. A new additional cooling system delivers optimum cooling at peak loads and, at very high temperatures, sprays the charge-air cooler with water. This causes the gas temperature to fall in the overpressure range and ensures optimum power output, even under extreme conditions. The customised GT seven-speed double-clutch transmission (PDK) in the new GT2 RS enables power to be transferred with uninterrupted traction.

Porsche set a new record for road-approved sports cars on the 20.6-kilometre Nürburgring Nordschleife in the 911 GT2 RS on 2017 September 20. The record time of 6 minutes and 47.3 seconds was achieved in the presence of a notary and surpassed even Porsche’s own expectations. Frank-Steffen Walliser, Vice President Motorsport and GT Cars, said: “At the start of the development process, we set ourselves a lap time target for the GT2 RS of less than 7 minutes and 5 seconds. The credit for beating this target by 17.7 seconds goes to our development engineers, mechanics and drivers, who demonstrated an exceptionally strong team performance. This result makes it official: The GT2 RS is not only the most powerful, but also the fastest 911 ever built”.

2-Concept Cars and Design Studies

2-1- Renault Symbioz autonomous electric concept

“No longer can we think of car design in isolation from the ecosystem surrounding us, or from the evolution of major changes like electric energy use, connected and autonomous drive technologies that influence our lives as we move from place to place. This is truly a unique project that allowed us to work with our planners, designers & engineers, academics & architects, startups and sociologues to explore new boundaries in customer experience, technology and energy use and design harmony to form a complete experience.”
Laurens van den Acker
 – Senior Vice President, Corporate Design

The SYMBIOZ concept showcases Renault’s vision of the car of the future and its role in our lives inside and outside the car. It comprises a car, a demo car and a home. SYMBIOZ comes under the ‘Wisdom’ petal of Renault’s lifecycle-based design strategy, suggesting maturity.

The SYMBIOZ concept on display at the Frankfurt Motor Show looks ahead to a horizon of up to 2030, and Renault has also developed a demo car, which foreshadows a vehicle in a closer timeframe, around 2023.

Inside the home, Renault SYMBIOZ symbolically shows how cars can play an even more important role in our everyday lives by 2030.

Renault SYMBIOZ provides extra space and features for the home, taking on different functions according to the needs and desires of occupants. Inside the home, SYMBIOZ becomes a snug, mobile, comfortable and modular extra room.

“Renault SYMBIOZ shows how we may combine the car with the home. The car becomes a new mobile, multi-purpose living space for the whole family and can be used - open or closed - more fully, even when parked. But this spectacular work also operates in another important way. The car allows passengers to feel at home when traveling, thanks to the interior design. It is underpinned by the idea of maximizing the available space for the passengers without taking anything away from comfort and modularity. Each one has a space to live a personal experience, but this space and this experience can also be shared by all.”
Stéphane Janin

2-3 - Audi Aicon Electric Autonomous Concept

With the four-door design vision Audi Aicon, the brand with the four rings is presenting a autonomous Audi of the future – with no steering wheel or pedals. As a design concept, the four-door 2+2 boldly leaps ahead to show the exterior and interior design of the next decades. The technology demonstrator combines innovations relating to the drivetrain, suspension, digitalization and sustainability in a visionary manner. The Aicon, too, is designed for purely electric operation and should be able to cover distances between 700 and 800 kilometers (435.0 - 497.1 mi) on a single charge.

Design study, technology demonstrator, mobility concept: The Audi Aicon exploits every possibility offered by a autonomous luxury sedan of the future with unprecedented consistency. As a design study, the four-door 2+2 boldly leaps ahead to show the exterior and interior design of the next decades. The technology demonstrator combines innovations relating to the drivetrain, suspension, digitalization and sustainability in a visionary manner.

The very shape of the Audi Aicon reveals that it is a car from another world, an automobile of the future. The technology used in the concept vehicle has also been systematically designed for this world. It presumes a transportation infrastructure in which autonomously driving automobiles are a given on every street. Road users are connected to one another and their surroundings.

The drive and the total vehicle have also been optimally adapted to this new world of mobility. A highly efficient electric drive provides for the dynamics of the Audi Aicon. A total of four electric motors are located in the area of the front and rear axles. The energy storage units are integrated into the area below the floor. These are solid body batteries with considerably more energy capacity than lithium-ion batteries.

One thing that an autonomously driving vehicle of the future definitely won’t need anymore are long-range headlights. The Audi Aicon’s laser and radar sensor system also “sees” enough even in the dark, can reliably find the way and detects possible obstacles in good time. All this time the passengers can use the services provided by myAudi or even close their eyes for a while. When passengers exit the Audi Aicon in the dark, a “light companion” is activated: A mini-drone with a flashlight safely illuminates the user’s walking path.

2-14- Volkswagen SEDRIC Autonomous Electric Concept

The Volkswagen Group is consistently developing its own vision of mobility as SEDRIC. The company has presented its latest evolution stage of the SElf-DRIving Car at the International Motor Show (IAA) 2017 in Frankfurt/Main. In future, this car will form the platform for a diverse model family.

SEDRIC is the first concept car from the Volkswagen Group and it symbolises the transformation of the company from a thoroughbred vehicle manufacturer to an integrated provider of hardware, software and digital mobility services. The concept for mobility of tomorrow combines fully automated driving at Level 5, electrification and digital networking. It permits simple, convenient, sustainable and safe mobility for everybody at the touch of a button. The Volkswagen Group will achieve this vision within the concept of urban mobility and in numerous other vehicle concepts from sports cars, through luxurious touring saloons to lightweight commercial vehicles and trucks.

The vehicle will be available for its users round the clock and can be called up at any time using the Volkswagen OneButton, the mobility app or the digital assistant in order to transport individuals conveniently from door to door. "SEDRIC will make a huge social contribution because it offers individual mobility to visually-impaired people, members of the older generation, physically-challenged individuals and children," continued Jungwirth. "Furthermore, the fully autonomous mobility concept gives back around 38,000 hours to each person – for reading, learning, enjoyment, relaxation, playing and working."

The pioneering concept of autonomous mobility available for everybody at the touch of a button is also reflected in the vehicle design. At first glance, SEDRIC is recognisable as a completely innovative vehicle concept. The memorable design of its exterior is defined by the monolithic proportions without a classic bonnet and by the generous surfaces including the covered wheels. "Powerful bodywork pillars, distinctive wheelhouses and short overhangs give SEDRIC an impressively robust appearance as the epitome of safety and trustworthiness," explained Michael Mauer, Head of Design at the Volkswagen Group. "The headlamps provide a design feature and take on the function of eyes. They make visual contact with people in the immediate surroundings and interact with them." The portal-style doors are inviting, the lounge atmosphere in the interior without a steering wheel and pedals provides all the occupants with enjoyable mobility and an unrestricted view through large window areas and a varied infotainment programme.

Right from the start, SEDRIC has been designed for shared mobility in the urban environment. However, individual configuration also meets the requirements as a vehicle for owned mobility. The technological basis of the Modular Electrification Building box (MEB) from the Volkswagen Group offers scope to design brand-specific features for mobility of the future.

2-16- AUDI Elaine Electric Autonomous Concept

Audi Elaine concept car – highly automated at level 4

A familiar face – The exterior of the Audi Elaine concept car debuted just a few months ago. In May 2017, Audi presented the celebrated Audi e-tron Sportback design study and technology demonstrator at Auto Shanghai in China. The IAA debutant shares its body line, electric drive and not least its distinctive exterior lighting with the precursor to the second production electric car from Audi.

For its drive, the Audi Elaine uses a configuration that Audi will use in future production models with all-electric drive: One electric motor on the front axle and two on the rear power all four wheels, transforming the high-performance coupé into a quattro in typical Audi style.

320 kilowatts of power – which can even reach 370 kW in the boost mode – provide a fitting level of propulsion. Elaine sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in just 4.5 seconds. With the battery’s energy content of 95 kilowatt-hours, its range is in excess of 500 kilometers (310.7 miles) (NEDC). There are two options for charging the battery: a wired fast charging function at 150 kW or wireless charging via the Audi Wireless Charging system.

Setting the Audi Elaine apart from the Shanghai show car are numerous functions that push the envelope for piloted driving and assistance systems, and in a few years will also extend the scope of Audi AI in production models. The foundation is provided by a much more advanced zFAS controller installed in the rear.

The new generation processor has more computing power and refined sensors with even greater range and precision. The Audi Elaine can therefore serve its owner as a highway pilot, relieving the burden on the driver over extended distances. The highway pilot is an extension of the traffic jam pilot in the A8 and allows piloted driving at speeds from 60 to 130 km/h (37.3 to 80.8 mph), which in most countries is the maximum permissible speed.
When the highway pilot is active, the Audi Elaine changes lanes automatically – it can pass and then return to the original lane, for example. It can initiate, perform and complete such actions autonomously, without any involvement of the person behind the wheel. If the driver does want to intervene, they can do so spontaneously at any time.

The Audi Elaine continues to support the driver after leaving the highway and multilane urban freeways behind. All of the usual driver assistance systems are on board, including the pre sense safety technologies and the predictive efficiency assistant, which can be provided with even more precise route details from the HERE navigation data.

2-17- KIA Proceed Concept

The new Kia Proceed Concept has been created by Kia’s European design centre in Frankfurt, and hints at the design of the next-generation cee’d model family.
Unveiled for the first time today, the concept presents a new body type for Kia. The extended hot hatch styling provides a low roofline, muscular proportions and compact footprint. The concept features a striking ‘Sharkblade’ in the bodywork which reinforces the lack of B-pillars, while lateral strakes exaggerate the Proceed Concept’s waistline and lend an air of muscularity to the rear of the car. The concept is finished in bespoke ‘Lava Red’ paintwork, created by combining multiple hand-applied layers of black, chrome-effect silver, and red-tinted lacquer.

Inside, the cabin is inspired by the world of bespoke tailoring and haute couture. Four split-back seats are wrapped in rippled black fabric, tailored by hand, with hand-painted satin fabric lining the doors and flowing into the footwells. The Proceed Concept’s dashboard controls are finished in highly tactile knurled aluminium.

Gregory Guillaume, Chief Designer Europe for Kia Motors, commented: “With many European drivers now seeking performance alternatives to the three-door hot hatch style, we began thinking about a different halo model for the cee’d family. The Proceed Concept represents a bold new vision of how the vibrant soul of the pro_cee’d could be reincarnated and revitalised for a new generation of performance-oriented drivers.”
