The First Fiat ( Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino) model was produced at the end of 1899 at the workshop of the recently acquired Ceirano while fitting work was being completed at the workshop in Corso Dante. After the initial eight automobiles built in 1899, a further 18 were produced. At the time, in Italy, there was a total of 111 cars in circulation which represents one automobile for every 302.000 inhabitants. It is needless to say that there are different details on each model. Designed by the engineer Aristide Faccioli, the car could carry 2 to 3 passengers in a face to face configuration and had a chain transmission. The “Duc” bodywork was designed by Marcello Alessio of Turin. The rear seat had a folding hood.

The model had a 679 cc. engine (mm 65 x 99) although some had an 837 cc. engine mounted. The engine was a horizontal two cylinder side by side with T head combustion chamber; the inlet and exhaust valves were vertical and opposed. The ignition was by ignition coil and accumulator. The compression ratio was 4:1. Cooling was by water pump and finned radiator. The car designation was 3.5 HP but was also known as the 4 HP. Power was nominally stated as 3.5 HP for tax reasons. The engine was located at the rear connected with a three speed gearbox and chain drive. There was no reverse gear.  The claimed power output was 4.2 HP at 800 rpm. Top speed was 35 kph and fuel consumption announced for 8 litre per 100 km (35 mpg). Curb weight was 420 kg.
