The Chevrolet Corvette entered American Racing events, started having trouble winning when Carrol Shelby arrived with his Cobra Ford. Even though  General Motors officially did not at that time , participate in competition, it was decided to prepare a lightweight Sting Ray for the tracks. It was called Grand Sport . The weight was reduced to 900 kg  due to a tubular ladder frame and special light body;  the engine was a 6 liters V8 producing 550 cv. The car had wider tracks front and rear. The body was fitted with several impressive air vents for the engine compartment and cooling of rear axle. Only 5 cars were built so that it had to enter the prototype class rather than GT. The Grand Sport never reached European circuits because General Motors soon returned to banning official participation in racing events.
