Callaway is an American Company specialized in improving performances and customizing body shape of sports cars. The company specialized in Chevrolet Corvette C4 customizing and participated in endurance racing with its Callaway Corvette SuperNatural GT2. The Callaway Corvette SuperNatural GT2 was entered in Le Mans 1994 for the first time when it was disqualified for refueling on the track. In 1995 three GT2 were entered at Le Mans with two finishing 9th and 11th overall and one not completing the race.  The Callaway Corvette SuperNatural participated in Le Mans 24 hours until 1997.

For 1996 edition of Le Mans, Callaway decided to develop from scratch a GT1 prototype. It was completed as C7 R  suitable for track racing while a C7 intended for the road was scheduled according to FIA homologation rules. The Callaway C7 R was equiped with a 6297 cc Corvette V8 in mid front position, that is just behind the front axle. The Callaway C7 R was fitted with smooth aerodynamic body with gull wing doors and an impressive rear spoiler.

Two cars were entered for Le Mans in 1996 but only one participated in the Preliminary qualifying days. The Callaway C7R unfortunately did not qualify. A modified version was entered in Rolex Daytona 24 Hours but did not complete the race. A change in FIA GT1 rules ended the short career of the Callaway C7 R.
