The Bugatti Type 35 was first introduced at the 1924 French Grand Prix in Lyon. Five automobiles were entered in the race and only two finished. There were serious problems with the new tires loosing thread.

The Bugatti Type 35, however, soon became one of the most successful racing car of its time. It was also proposed in road use trim with cycle fenders and lamps.
It was a brand new car eventhough many technical solutions were evolution of existing Bugatti techniques.

The engine was eight cylinders in line composed of two blocks of four cylinders with a common distribution and crankshaft. There was a single overhead camshaft operating three valves per cylinder; There was two small admission valves and one large exhaust valve. The crankshaft was made of several parts and was running on five bearings. The crankshaft bearings as well as the connecting rods were operating with roller bearings.

The chassis was an evolution of previous models with pressed steel elements of different section and thickness in order to optimize strenght with limited weight.

The wheels were a new design with eight spokes made of aluminium alloy castings assembled with the brake drum for easy and quick changes during racing events.

The Bugatti Type 35 was soon proposed in different versions with different engine capacity and eventual supercharger. The key to its success was that all these versions were proposed for sale to gentlemen drivers who accumulated victories in different racing categories and events. The competition would rather operate with works entered competition cars.

All Bugatti Type 35 and derivatives share the same main overall dimensions and typical body style with horse shoe shaped radiator. The radiators may vary in thickness according to engine specifications.

Some variations of the Bugatti Type 35 :

  • Type 35 - 8 cylinders, 1991 cc., atmospheric admission, 90 hp
  • Type 35A -simplified Type 35 with 8 cylinder 1991 cc, three bearings crankshaft, 80 hp -  Rudge wire wheels.
  • Type 35C -8 cylinders, five bearing crankshaft, 1991 cc, supercharger, 120 hp
  • Type 35 T and 35B -8 cylinders, 2262 cc with supercharger
  • Type 39 -8 cylinders, 1493 cc., atmospheric admission
  • Type 39A - 8 cylinders, 1493 cc., supercharger
  • Type 51  - 8 cylinders, 2262 cc., two overhead camshafts, supercharger, 175 hp
  • Type 37 - 4 cylinders, 1496 cc., atmospheric admission,  60 hp
  • Type 37A  - 4 cylinders, 1496 cc., supercharger, 90 hp.
