Aston Martin DB 2/4 Bertone Competition Spider 1953 1954

At the 1952 Turin Motor Show, Nuccio Bertone was displaying a pair of MG chassis with coupe and cabriolet bodies. S.H. “Wacky” Arnolt was immediately interested at first sight of the special bodies. S.H. Arnolt was Chicago distributor for Aston Martin, Bentley, Rolls Royce, Bristol, MG, Riley and Morris automobiles. He ordered one hundred MG Bertone roadsters. All these cars were promptly sold on arrival in the US.

S.H. Arnolt decided to move for chassis with higher power and signed with Bristol an agreement to purchase chassis. This was the base for the Arnolt Bristol that was successful in the US even in sports car races. A team of Arnolt Bristol was entered at 1960 Sebring 12 Hours.

The Bertone spider body style was also adopted for five Aston Martin DB 2-4 chassis provided once again by S.H. Arnolt. Three chassis received bodywork suitable for competition while the two other ones were prepared for road use with full trimming and high windscreen.

The Aston Martin DB 2-4 Competition Spider illustrated here was proposed at RM Auction in Villa Erba in 2011. It was sold for 672.000 Euros.
It is equipped with a 140 hp 2.922 cc Vantage specification DOHC in-line six cylinder engine and a four-speed manual gearbox. There are independent front suspensions with coil springs while the rear suspension is with live axle, trailing arms and coil springs. There are hydraulic drum brakes on all wheels. Wheelbase is 2.515 mm (91 in.)

This competition spider is the first cooperation element between Bertone and Aston Martin
